Firebirds Rocky Mountain Grill

191 Main St., Patton Creek Shopping Center, Hoover

This is a small, Charlotte-based chain of about a dozen locations featuring bold southwest flavors incorporated with aged steaks, chicken, and pizza. The 7,000-square-foot restaurant features the ambiance of a Colorado ski lodge with an open-air kitchen, large exposed high wooden beams and an expansive fireplace in the bar area.

After visits on two occasions, my wife and I are convinced that their food and service are consistently good -- as are the prices. The Southwestern theme depicted in the menu descriptions and the decor might intimidate some, but the food is delicately flavored rather than being fiery as we first feared. (November 2005)

My husband started with a Fireside Martini (Relax in front of our fire and enjoy this mixture of Stoli Ohranj vodka, GranGala and Southern Comfort) which he loved, and I got one of the best Bloody Mary's I've ever had( I could have been influenced by the three HUGE olives that were included). They had a very interesting house drink list. For appetizers, we tested their Calamari which was good (but chopped way too small to be conveniently eaten) and the Coconut Jumbo Shrimp which were delicious. Both dishes came with a in house dip which was spicy yet sweet (sweeter with the coconut shrimp...mango habaƱero chutney) and each of which was wonderful. Then on to the main course. I chose the Chile Rubbed Delmonico (a southwest combination of chile-pepper and mesquite wood accents this steak perfectly) which I ordered rare and it was soooo good I ate the whole 14 oz. They knew how took cook it rare too, done outside, purple inside! Every bite was delicious and went well with the salt crusted baked potato. Andrew had their Herb Roasted Prime Rib which was heavenly and oh so bloody(he ordered rare also). On a more general note, the service was excellent, even though most of the staff was still in training since it was their first night open! The decor however served to make me severly homesick (meaning it was beautiful in that oh so Rocky Mountain way!) I would recommend this restaurant to any of my friends. I can not wait to go back. My girlfriend took me here for my birthday, along with both our children (we have one each). Everything we had was great -- the wine, the atmosphere, and even the children behaved. I ordered the Filet mignon, medium rare, with a small lobster tail on the side. What a wonderful filet! Very likely the best I've had this year. I'll be back!
