Sol's Sandwich Shop & Deli
2 N 20th St (the corner of Morris Ave and 20th St. downtown)
244-7657
Burgers, Mediterranean food (like pitas and hummus), sandwiches, salads, daily vegetable selection. Breakfast and lunch. The back of the menu explains, "Sol Bajalieh arrived in the United States in 1965. His love of two things, people and food, inspired him to open Sol's Sandwich Shop & Deli in 1968 in downtown Birmingham at the original John Hand building. Sol provided the downtown scene with delicious meals until the building was condemned in 1995. Fast forward 13 years later, and Sol's three sons, Jeff, Chris, and Jason, have revived a great Birmingham tradition to honor their late father." In a November 2008 review, City Scene's Susan Swagler says the food and service were five-star, with praise for the Cuban sandwich, the camel rider sandwich, and a "fantastic" vegetable plate, but she dinged it a star for the "cheerless lack of atmosphere".

Went for lunch and it was great. Burgers (I had the Camel Rider - Ground beef patty, sauteed onions, cheddar cheese, lettuce and tomato, stuffed in freshly baked pita bread), Sandwiches, Salads plus great sides like tabouli and Mrs. Sol's homemade hummus.
I eat breakfast and lunch here just about everyday. Sol's food is awesome!! I encourage everyone in the Downtown area to eat here. They have a huge selection on their menu so you will find something you like to eat. And don't forget you will need to save room for their banana pudding because it's terrific. Chris, Jason & Jeff make eating at Sol's very enjoyable. Trust me, you won't be disappointed with your decision when you eat at Sol's!!
