A 1970's Homewood landmark serving traditional and designer sandwiches, gourmet salads (including a fabulous fruit plate), cheesecakes and milkshakes for dessert, is now franchising and has several locations around town. Menus vary somewhat by location, but all have the O'Carr's mantra "eat by color," emphasizing a balanced diet, fresh ingredients and attractive presentation.

My husband and I tried O'Carrs at Cahaba Heights for dinner. To read the menu, you expect a fun and tasty dining experience. We were very disappointed. I tried the crepe with Crab - it reads 2 crepes with cream sauce and toasted almonds. What I got was one giant crepe with crab covered in a thick layer of cheese. Toasted almonds were sprinkled on top after I said they were missing. The cheese layer over powered the delicate flavor of the crepe. I believe they do it just so they can run it through a moving oven and cook the crab too. When I questioned the cheese the response was "do you not like cheese?". According to the menu it wasn't supposed to be there in the first place. My husband got a chicken BLT. The chicken was previously frozen and looks like what you can get in bulk with fake grill marks. The salad came with only on salad dressing, and there were no substitutions. From the reputation of O'Carrs I expected better service and better food. (August 2006)

This is a terrible restaurant, period. The Homewood location is constantly overcrowded to the point that you have to actually move out of the way for someone to exit the restaurant. Prices for a simple sandwich are out of sight and, oh, don't forget to add $1.50 more if you'd like chips with that sandwich. How cheap can you be??

The chicken salad was bland and dill weed-y. I ordered the nut bread and wondered why it came with an option for cream cheese. This is easily explained - the bread is so dry it practically crumbles in your hand.

The famous chocolate shake is worth the $3.25, but otherwise O'Carr's is a typical Homewood boutique establishment - cute packaging and a well-connected name covering an overpriced, mediocre product. Do NOT eat here unless you enjoy being gouged.

I can't imagine anyone not liking this place. To the person who said it was crowded...well, that is because all THOSE people like it! First, all meal decisions at O'Carr's need to consider what you'll have for dessert. Their unique cheesecake, served warm with outstanding fillings, delectable crust and whipped cream? Or an overflowing mug of homemade milkshake? After making that decision, THEN you can decide what's for your first course. I always choose a turkey and havarti sandwich on wheat with a side of pasta salad.- a perfect combination. If you want to vary your chicken salad and fruit habit (I agree, you have to like dill to enjoy their chicken salad), you can also order turkey with your fruit plate, OR a fruit and cheese plate. I challenge you to finish everything on your plate. How about that poached pear salad? Filled with walnuts, served over turkey and greens with two delicious dressings, yum! My friends argue that the crab dip or asparagus salad should get top billing, but I just can't let go of my favorites. How long is it until lunch? The only reason I don't tell more people about this place is that I don't want to see any new converts in front of me in the line. Thankfully, the overflow is nicely handled by their new locations. The tastes at O'Carr's can't be found anywhere else!

I too have some issues with the Homewood location - too crowded! I don't mind cozy, but I don't care to have someone touching elbows with me while I eat. I will not eat at the Homewood location again. The last time we ate there the wait was long and the fruit was brown.
The Hoover location is much better. We have not had a bad meal there.
