Menu includes items from basics such as grilled cheese and club sandwich to a Cajun chicken tortilla and a half or whole muffuletta. Order at the counter and help yourself to a drink. A June 2010 Birmingham News review by Deeana Crider praised the Texas Hammer, with grilled sliced ham and pepper jack cheese served in a hoagie bun and dressed with hot sauce and spicy salsa. The Juicy Lucy, a ground beef patty stuffed with cheddar, was found to be rather thin and dry, served on basil focaccia bread. The Greek marinated chicken in the Greek chicken pita also was said to be dry and lacking in flavor. The Greek salad, a creamy pasta salad rather than the traditional greens-based version, had "an overwhelmingly tangy flavor." Nevertheless, the restaurant got three stars out of five, and the service was fast and friendly.

Brick & Tin

214 20th St. North
297-8636
www.brickandtin.com
Mauricio Papapietro, after working for some of Birmingham's top chefs, opened this lunch spot, focusing on the humble sandwich as a really good medium for really good ingredients. Serving authentic pressed Cuban sandwiches piled high with roasted pork and Swiss cheese and drenched in mojo sauce. We thought the service was great for a counter-service place, Cuban sandwich and the chicken sandwich (which Ramirez also makes in-house) were delicious, and the plaintain chips for sale were an authentic touch. How well did they succeed? "All in all you're going to like Max's but still harbor a longing for those special places in New York City," Tom Gaskin writes. The menu is "ambitious and extensive." Don't miss the potato knish with brown gravy, he says. or the New York cheesecake. Also good are latkes, chopped liver, beef brisket dinner, Rueben sandwich, and hot pickled tongue sandwich, he said. Not so good -- soups, grilled chilled chicken sandwich with avocado and bacon. We've been a couple times ourselves (we would go more often if we lived closer) and loved the Reuben, the chopped liver/pastrami/tomato sandwich, and Chicago-style hot dogs.

Sol's Sandwich Shop & Deli

2 N 20th St (the corner of Morris Ave and 20th St. downtown)
244-7657
Burgers, Mediterranean food (like pitas and hummus), sandwiches, salads, daily vegetable selection.
