After hearing legendary praise for the Garage Café, we decided to try it one weekday for lunch. A couple of times I had wanted to go there, but it is really hard to find. Thanks to Mapquest, we arrived shortly after noon on a lovely spring day. We just beat the business crowd in the door, and we were thankful. As first time visitors, we didn?t understand we were supposed to go up to the bar counter to order the drinks and the kitchen counter to order our sandwiches. After clearing this up, we ordered. We had time to take in the cool décor and architectural antiques in both the café and the courtyard out back before we got our sandwiches. The waitstaff were all friendly, such as the waiter who, standing behind the bar, told us we had to go to the kitchen to place our food order, and then appeared in the kitchen to take it. The sandwiches were great. They also feature a soup of the day, which was French Onion on our trip. I had a smoked turkey on wheat, and my husband had a tuna salad on rye. Their bread alone is worth the visit. This place is another example of doing one thing, but doing it well. It must be a really awesome bar at night. The prices are reasonable for the food and atmosphere -- just remember, they don't take plastic, so make sure you have some cash. (April 2005)
