I have been to Diplomat Deli several times over the past few years and find that my experience is always a pleasure. They offer a great Deli style menu with a nice simple atmosphere. Soup selections vary each day and I highly recommend the French Onion or the Beer Cheese soup. There are many sandwiches on the menu! I recommend the Diplomat and Senator. Diplomat offers a chance to get away from the franchise environment and step into a locally owned atmosphere that offers great food. They also have a selection of over hundreds of wines and a huge selection of import and domestic beer. Great food, Great prices, Great atmosphere, Great Friendly Service. (March 2006)
I agree that this place has great food and sandwich selections that can't be found at the cookie cutter fast food places. The Californian (cream cheese, pepper jelly, turkey and sprouts), The Hawaiian (pineapple and cheese) Old Favorite (peanut butter and bananna)-- I hope I have the names and ingredients correct. There are plenty of hot and cold sandwich choices plus you can specify your own ingredients from their list. Plenty of chips and a pickle with each sandwich. My friends who like Ruebens believe Diplomat's are the best and most authentic to be found in Birmingham. I have another friend that loves their French onion soup. Great atmosphere? Not so much...Great service? I eat there 2-3 times a month and we've always found the service spotty, at best. Often slow, but worth the wait. Oh, and to be smack in the middle of the South, they rarely get the tea right...so order one of the other beverages from the hundreds of choices...not just the beers, but also hard to find sodas like Buffalo Rock.
Our favorite deli. The sandwich selection is fabulous. They do need to learn how to make a good beer cheese soup.
