Sanpeggio's Pizza

Pizza, pasta, salads, subs. While takeout and delivery pizzas are definitely better than the chains, and the meatball sub is quite good, the dine-in experience at the Valleydale location was disappointing.

In choosing a location that offers quick, inexpensive cuisine for those on a tight budget, I found that Sanpeggios' in Hoover fits the bill. The selection was very broad. I chose the 'Build your own' from the Calzone family. I had a choice from either the 'Gourmet, Specialty combinations or Pizza Topping' to complete my calzone. A great avenue for those who love calz ones, and looking for variety. The result was a calzone fit for a prince, the Pesto from the 'Gourmet' area. The blend of cheeses and the sun-dried tomatoes gave a aleasent taste to the mouth when paired with the fresh pesto sauce, which is hand-made on site. Sanpeggios does offer a delivery service, but be aware that there is a minimum order amount. Overall, my service and atmosphere at Sanpeggio's Pizza was very enjoyable and I would advise anyone on a tight budget to indulge in the opportunity(ie) that Sanpeggio's has to offer. (April 2004)
I work right next to Sanpeggio's and eat there regularly. I LOVE their calzone (can get it with whatever you want inside of it) and on Tuesdays, they have 2 for the price of 1 subs. The meatball sub is NOT to be missed, but one of their newer subs, the Chad's Chicken sub, is EXCELLENT! I would heartily recommend them!

VALLEYDALE LOCATION: I'm glad someone has had a positive experience with Sanpeggio's. I've had mostly negative ones and will no longer give them my business (Valleydale location or any other). In the past, I've always ordered delivery from them. Two out of four times they failed to put any chicken on my spinach alfredo after I specifically asked for it (and paid for it). I let that slide as I was starving every time by the time they got here (they're only two minutes from my house). But tonight was the last straw. I went into the Valleydale location to order some food. After placing my order, I realized I'd left my wallet in the car. On my way out the door to retrieve my wallet, two smart-aleck (and in my opnion, drunk or high) delivery drivers (or friends of the manager) who were sitting at the counter-top were screaming "uh, sir, you must pay for your food", as if they were being funny. Personally, I didn't find it funny at all, and on my way back in I gave them a good stare. These are two kids who need a good *ss-kicking. For a split moment I considered picking up a chair and wasting them both, but I don't like to be sued. I should've gotten in my car and left then. The manager condoned this behavior, as he didn't say anything to them about it and later behaved just as badly himself. After paying I sat down to wait on my order. Keep in mind, this was about 8:20 on a Monday night. Also, a very young girl was working the cash register. As I was sitting there, I could not help but hear graphic cuss words (that no patron should hear) between the "manager" and the two kids at the bar. They were not trying in the least bit to be quiet and respectful of their customer. Every time the phone would ring with a delivery order, the manager would scream. After getting off the phone, he would make fun of the customers who had called in (with me sitting right there). At about 8:25, he told one customer they were no longer delivering, even though a delivery guy had walked in the door from a delivery 5 minutes earlier. Him and the young girl were the only ones not yelling, screaming and being a nuisance. I almost got up and asked for my money back, as at that point I was getting a little worried about actually eating any food prepared there. But I endured the disrespect and lack of professionalism (to say the least) for a few more minutes and the young girl brought my food to me. I was never asked if I wanted it to go or not. The manager simply wanted to leave and made every effort to do no more business past the time HE decided the store should do no more business (not the time established by the owner, on the window). As soon as I got home, I called another location, spoke with the manager (Ryan) and left my number for the owner (who owns all the locations). I told Ryan briefly what it was about, and he apologized and said he would have the owner call me. I don't want anything free out of it, as I'm afraid to eat their food at this point. However, I do want the owner to be aware of how his store is being run into the ground.
UPDATE TO ABOVE POST:
The owner of Sanpeggio's called me back this morning. I told him what happened last night, and he listened. He said the manager from last night had been a good employee in other positions, so he was giving him a chance at management. However, he said that employee would no longer be a manager there, and apologized. He said he hoped I would come in again for a better experience. I probably will, though I will give them several weeks to get things straightened out. I'm glad the owner called me back and stated proper action would be taken. It shows he cares about his stores and his customers' experiences. I want to see locally-owned businesses like Sanpeggio's succeed. If you do, too, and you have a very bad experience at an independently-owned restaurant or other business, SPEAK UP by asking to speak directly with the owner, or to have the owner call you. Otherwise, owners usually have no idea what needs to be fixed in order to improve their customers' experience - especially at chains where they simply can't be at every store.
