New York Pizza
1010 Oxmoor Road (Edgewood/Homewood)

When we lived in Tuscaloosa, which at the time had no pizza other than chains, we used to drive to Birmingham to eat at New York Pizza. Sweet and zesty sauce, traditional toppings. Try their house vinaigrette on your salad. Voted "Best Pizza" in the Birmingham News' 2003 readers' poll.

Ate at NY Pizza on a Friday night of Free Friday Movies in Homewood Park. The place was very packed and extremely noisy. It had a family-friendly vibe, but not a good atmosphere for a date at a table for two. The noise made it hard to hear across the booth. The service was good, though not overly fast. I had pizza (the sauce was sweet as advertised; not bad but too sweet for my taste); my companion had pepperoni lasagna, which she enjoyed and I thought was a good spin on a classic. Portions were very fair. I say go and take the kids, but if you're looking for cozy and intimate think twice. They did not accept American Express.
My favorite pizza from New York Pizza is the Southampton. The Park Avenue had way too much garlic and was soggy and greasy. I've had mixed results with creating a custom pizza from their list of toppings, and if you order more than 2 toppings, the pizza is more expensive than what it's worth.
I don't think this place has ever been the same (excellent, that is) since they moved from their old location, just a few doors down. Must've been something special in that old oven!
I dine here often and particularly enjoy the Soho Sausage. I tend to visit on Thursdays between 1PM and 3PM when it is not crowded. Service is prompt and the food is very good and consistant.
