Dine in or carry out. Video games for the kids. Our favorite pizza in Birmingham. No fancy gourmet toppings here. The sauce is more tangy than zesty, with a thin crust, and what we think is provolone cheese rather than the usual stringy mozzarella. Cooked in old-fashioned pizza ovens and cut in squares rather than wedges, this is great pizza. Don't go too heavy on watery veggie toppings, or it will get mushy. We recommend the sausage. Pet peeve is they use canned mushrooms instead of fresh. Voted Best Pizza (Non-Chain) by Birmingham News readers in 2002.

This place was ok at best. The atmosphere is good, what you'd expect from a local pizza place. Crust was thin to the point of being cracker/crispy. Sauce was tangy and good. A little heavy handed with the cheese. Basic toppings. 2 huge negatives: 1. Pizza is cut up into tiny squares. Why would you do that? The pieces are either all crust, funny little wedges, or cheese covered messes. Impossible to eat, never mind fold. 2. Price. My large pie with 3 toppings (pepper, onion, sausage) was $23, which is absurd for what you're getting. Maybe because it's in Mountainbrook? At 1/2 the price I'd think about going back. Otherwise, I'll take my chances elsewhere.
The pizza is average. I actually find the dough and the cheese a little bland and the sauce slightly sweet as opposed to hearty or tangy. The prices are also a little high. There are other pizza places in town with better pizza. Despite this, we come back occasionally because of the local charm and cool pizza parlor atmosphere which no place in town can beat.
Davenport's pizza is outstanding and a Birmingham tradition! I would highly recommend it to anyone - couples, families, big groups, etc. It's a fun place with great pizza - much better than any place I have tried in Birmingham (or anywhere else actually). A friend of mine told me that Jay Barker and Sara Evans were in there recently - if they are willing to risk going out in public in the South and being recognized, the pizza must be worth it!
Davenport's is by far my absolute favorite pizza restaurant. Everyone should try it! The old arcade games (Centipede, PacMan, Galaga, etc.) add some fun to one side of the restaurant, or you can sit on the other side to simply enjoy a great pizza!
Slow service, overpriced/overrated pizza.
