Although I am a loyal Surin fan, my husband and I decided to give Thai Emerald a try. The decor is very appealing, with a water wall on one end and a bar and sushi bar with plasma TVs on the other end. Great lighting. For a Saturday lunch we had Chicken Massaman and Pud Thai. Both were very good, artfully served and with good flavor. The Massaman was rich and creamy with big pieces of chicken. And the Pud Thai was just right, with plenty of shrimp and chicken and perfect sauce. But what won me over was the SuperCrunch. I dare say it was better than the SuperCrunch at Surin. Good service, interesting decor and great food. Reasonably priced. I would highly recommend. (January 2005)

I was excited to finally visit Thai Emerald. The restaurant is beautiful with a unique but comfortable atmosphere. We started with the Fish Fried Spring Rolls, which were very good. They came with a sweet sauce that was also very good. For my meal, I chose a pineapple coconut curry chicken and shrimp dish that was great. I will definitely be going back to try the sushi and hopefully one of their many desserts. Thai Emerald is more on the expensive side, but it was a good choice for something out of the ordinary. My husband and I recently visited what I would rank as one of the BEST sushi restaurants in the Birminham area. After hearing about Thai Emerald from a co-worker all the time we decided to give it a try. Living in Helena traveling to 280 on a Saturday night is not a normal routine for us but we will return. We shared two appetizers, a squid salad, which was delicious but a little spicy and the tuna tataki...AWESOME!!! It was seared on the outside and melted in my mouth. I will definitely order it again. We also tried several of the rolls, my favorite being the California eel roll. It was a california roll topped with eel and avacado with a special sauce on top. The service was also a delight, our server was very prompt and polite. By the time we left my husband had already picked out his menu for our next visit...It was a wonderful experience!! A colleague at work told me how he had gone to lunch there and they had a deal where they could order a lot of different dishes similar to Spanish Tapas and he was thrilled with it.
While the decor is pretty and the food is good although servings are small, I have been appalled twice over service. I went at lunchtime to order food to go and was charged for a dinner meal even though the same item was offered at lunch and I was in time for lunch and had asked if they were serving lunch. The 2nd time I went back, I ordered take out and they charged me a dollar extra surcharge for takeout. I have never ever been charged extra for take out. My feeling about Thai Emerald is it is all about the money. They charge alot for small servings in order to pay off that restaurant. I won't go back and I am sure there has to be a decent thai restaurant in Birmingham but it surely isn't Thai Emerald. Two thumbs down.

I enjoy Thai Emerald, it is one of my favorite restuarants. I especially LOOOOVE the SuperCrunch, it is the best in Birmingham! Also, the beef and broccolli, it is a chinese restaurant staple that gets the treatment it deserves at Thai Emerald. My 10 year old son loves the Emerald Tile appetizer, and the Ambassador Chicken, though I order it less spicy for him. Hubby's favorite is the Pad Thai, not spicy, but has just the right balance of flavor. If it is a cold day or you are feeling a bit under the weather,the warm brothy beef noodle bowl will fix you right up. The only dish I tried that I did not like was the Weeping Tiger, it was too spicy for me, but otherwise everything else has been great.
