To-go or casual eat-in at the counter. Darryl "D" Crocket's family has been making tamales for more than 40 years based on an authentic recipe from Mexico given to his aunt. Advertised as "husk-suckin' good," D's tamales have garnered praise on the Al.com food and wine board, with writers comparing them favorably to the old Mancha's on Southside, the local tamale standard: "... absolutely perfect, not to mention really cheap... These husk wrapped little beauties had a wonderfully moist consistancy ... this little shop is a real jewel."

I went there and thought they had chicken tamales because that is what the online menu says. The owner told me that those are by special request, and gave me a beef tamale. I don't eat beef! I was very upset because I had told him all of that, and will never go back.
First of all let me say, the comment above mine is ridiculous! Because the online menu says one thing and when you get there the owner tells you they're "special order" you "will never go back!" That's crazy! Next time, now that you know, call in an order of chicken tamales. You are not a constructive customer, but a destructive one at best. Now, for my take. "D" the owner seems like a hard working small business owner. In his establishment there was no lack of conversation. Strangers carrying on! Go figure?? It was great! Pleasant atmosphere, laid back. I was treated courteously. In restaurants today you are hard pressed to find staff who is courteous. I had the wings because my friends said, "they're great!!" I am here to tell you they did not lead me wrong. I loved the wings! I will be back every chance I get and my support will far outweigh the above commentator as well as the friends I will be sending. Thanks for making this post possible.
Fantastic tamales in this place, one of my favorites in this area.
