VJ's on the Runway
5100 East Lake Blvd. (Behind the airport; Tarrant/Irondale area)
808-0582
Breakfast, lunch and dinner weekdays. Meat-n-three plus sandwiches, including the freshest collard greens in town and probably the best Reuben sandwich we've ever had. City Scene gave high marks to the Reuben, onion rings, meatloaf, cole slaw, fried green tomatoes, fried chicken, fried okra, country fried steak, collard greens, banana pudding and coconut pie, plus tamales "worth a try for those who miss Mancha's." Was one of two restaurants in Birmingham included in "Local Secrets, Big Finds" by Travelocity in 2007.

I'm at the air force base right down the road from here, and it is awesome! I go down here from time to time, the burgers are big and filling, and $3! everything is alacarte from the regular menu... I haven't ever eaten anything off the meat & 3 menu, but it all looks good when it comes out. Every thing comes out of the kitchen really quick. I've never waited more than 7-8 minutes for my food to come out.
Someone told me a long time ago that this place had some KILLER tamales, close to what Manchas had a long time ago.. I didn't see any on the menu though. The guy who owned Mancha's was a close friend of my mom and dad's... I remember going in as a child and getting the "Killer Whale!"
but the last few times I've went to VJ's I didn't see any tamales??
I visited VJ's on Wednesday October 13,2010 at about 130pm for a carry-out. It was the worst hamburger steak ever. The meat was rubbery and impossible to cut or eat. The greens, mexican cornbread, and crowder peas were excellent.Maybe it was because I did not see Caroline. I will visit again, but no more hamburger steak.
the breakfast food is good i loved the biscuit and gravy they give you plenty
