Serving lunch and dinner. Upscale Japanese restaurant serving authentic traditional and modern Japanese food and sushi in a relaxed, sophisticated environment (rather than the boisterous "shows" found at most area Japanese restaurants.) The food is exquisite, but be warned that this is not a place for people in a hurry. Also, it's a wise idea to plan to share, because dishes tend to not all come out together.

We visited Kimono on a Friday night. Although it was crowded, there is ample space and we were seated immediately. The restaurant has a pleasant and simple minimalist design and piano music in the background created a laid-back embiance. Several tables in the center of the restaurant offer a raised floor-style sitting area. Overall, the wait staff was attentive, but not excessively so. We ordered a variety of sushi and were pleasantly surprised. Having visited many of the Japanese restaurants in B'ham, this had *by far* the best sushi. The restaurant has a very large (5 page) menu in addition. Entrees include both traditional and non-traditional Japanese fare. For example, a special was grilled salmon with wasabi sauce. I should also mention that a lunch menu is available with dishes priced at around $8. In addition to the large sushi bar was an alcohol bar, which was quite popular. Overall, we were thrilled with Kimono and cannot wait to sample other items from their large menu. Be aware that parking may be difficult should this and the bars/restaurants next door fill up. I went on a Saturday night at 8 p.m. with a group of eight. We had reservations and were seated promptly. It went downhill from there. The service was not friendly and was very slow. The server had no knowledge of sushi and did not attempt to find out answers for us. Four of us ordered off the main menu and four ordered sushi. The main menu food came about 20-30 minutes before the sushi, the sushi took forever. One person's sushi never arrived. No one in my group plans to go back. (August 2004)
I went on a Saturday night, we had reservations and were seated promptly. We had a party of 5, and were very well taken care of. We started with sushi, which by the way was very very good. Then our meal came, which was also very good. The service was excellent, as was the food. The chef came out to our table to check on us. The music was great and very laidback. It would be a great place for a romantic dinner. It was an overall great experience and we plan on returning.
