Lovoy's Italian Restaurant

420 Green Springs Highway, Homewood
942-9866
www.lovoys.com
Dinner only. In a casual atmosphere that looks like it hasn't changed much since the '70s, dine on Italian-American classics like ravioli and lasagna, plus pizza, sandwiches. Don't miss the baked oysters. If you like garlic, try the baked shells. The sauce is better if you eat later; it's had more time to simmer. Pretty basic wine list.

After moving to Birmingham, it took me a while to find restaurants that weren't a "chain." After meeting a woman at a pool, she told me to try Lovoy's. It's excellent. I love the really laid back, casual atmosphere. Most of the time, I eat in the bar area, so we can watch TV while we eat. But they give huge portions at reasonable prices and the food is exceptional. They also try to accommodate whatever request you have with no difficulty! It's great. (September 2003)

Lovoy's is now open for lunch! I'm not sure of the hours, but they do dine-in and carry-out. I think they even have a less expensive lunch menu.

I used to eat here with my parents when I was a kid. Then I moved away, and came back, and its still here. Nothing's changed. The same decor (I'd be scared to see how things look with the lights up), same menu, same good food.

This place defines the italian-american dining experience in Birmingham with all of the classics like chicken and eggplant parmigana, veal marsala, and baked ziti and manicotti. They do these well. Portions are big and they are liberal with the cheese (bring your lipitor).

The breaded veal cutlet is the best.

Nothing fancy here, but a good value and enjoyable experience, particularly with a carafe of the house wine.

Lovoy's is a classic mom and pop red sauce Italian joint. Good food, good value.

I've only visited Lovoy's twice and wasn't impressed either time. The food was just ok and the atmosphere lacks as well. It looks as it did when it probably was first opened.

The food could have been prepared better in my opinion, as nothing really stood out as great. Next time, I will just make my own Italian food at home if I have to go there.

I can say that they are always crowded, so something must be right. But it might just be like Olive Garden... no one knows anything better, so they keep going there.

To all of you loyal Lovoy's fans, not telling you to stop going there, but definitely try new places like Amore and GianMarco's, as their food makes a statement.

it is what it is and it good food at a good price and it is relaxing and the oysters rock... the lasagna does as well. the sauce is a family recipe for over 40-50 years. the "poster" on Feb 20-2008 sounds like some one I know. He is a snob and thinks he is Simon Cowell. We have decided to go there just reading his snipes... nothing better than the bread at lovoys dipped in their sauce. try the JUNK salad. the family sold the restaurant to someone in their fmaily and they have cleaned the place up and have their Grandmother's recipes.

I grew up less than a mile from the place. So I have been eating regularly at Lovoy's for over four decades now. Other posters are right about how it hasn't changed much since it opened. If it ain't broke....the new third generation owner Zack ain't fixing it. But I do know he has upgraded everything behind the scenes while keeping the food and the feel from his granparent's generation. I gave gift cards to my 20 best clients because I knew all of them would have a great experience. Now I live over 20 miles from the joint and still drive in for the best oysters ever made, and real Italian family recipes no cookbook or culinary school trained chef could ever hope to duplicate. Everything on the menu would be a bargain at twice the price. I should know I have eaten the entire menu and remember a time when the prices were half what they are today. Hope to still be eating there when it is a fourth generation sucess story. Mama and Papa Lovoy are surely very proud.

Been living and eating at Lovoy's for over 30 years and since the new guy (guy with spiked hair and a know it all) Lovoy's has gone down hill. Steaks and veal are the WORST in town,Salad dressings- no flavor- all pasta dishes are rubbery except for the lasagna noodles- New guy needs to get Lovoy's to go back to years ago and leave well enough alone!!!!
