GianMarco's
721 Broadway, Homewood (near Green Springs end of Broadway)

Lunch and dinner, full bar, reservations necessary (call at least a week and a half in advance for weekend reservations). The best Italian in Birmingham, hands-down. Cozy neighborhood Italian bistro offering sandwiches, salads, pasta and more. Dishes include fried calamari, eggless Caesar salad, pasta e fagioli, pork tenderloin with polenta, tuna steak with risotto, and zuppa di pesce over linguini. Don't miss the pistachio-crusted fried oysters appetizer. Lunch menu features sandwiches such as smoked turkey, grilled apples and Gorgonzola; grilled chicken with sauteed spinach and mushrooms; and grilled portobello mushrooms with roasted peppers.

We finally found some decent Italian food in the south! We were so spoiled after a trip to Italy and hadn't been able to find any place in Alabama that was worth dining out. We resorted to cooking home and trying to recreate the food we enjoyed in Italy. We were so thankful to find this new treasure. I am proud of our little metropolitan city in the south when my parent's come for a visit. I can finally say 'We have a great Italian place!" ( September 2003)
Recently enjoyed a fine dining experience at GianMarco's in Homewood. Small, limited parking, and hidden away in Homewood, this restaurant is as first-class as any in Birmingham. The ambiance is friendly, service quite professional and our meal was extraordinary. My wife and I both had the night's special, blackfis. It was served with an oyster sauce and spinach. Wine list is not extensive but more than adequate. There were no weaknesses in the dinner from the table bread through the coffee and desert. This is a place to linger over a fine meal. Conversation is easy with soft jazz playing in the background. Prices are reasonable for the quality involved. ine dining in a non-stuffy atmosphere -- the only problem is that it is always full to capacity. (September 2003)
A great restraunt with tasty traditional italian using fresh fresh fresh ingredients. Service is mixed and depends on the waiter you get. There is one guy in particular who has the personality of pencil lead and who acts annoyed if you ask any questions.
The food is always good however. For a really great experience, I recommend eating at the kitchen counter. You get top notch service at the counter and you get to watch the food being made. Its actually quite enjoyable, and one time we did it, is my favorite experience at this place. Only room for two though, but its quite romantic.
On 3/22/08, our group sat down for our 5:30pm reservation to enjoy a fine meal with good service. As we were finishing up chatting over our post-meal decaf (a few minutes after 7pm), the owner came to our table and asked us to leave. It seems his 7pm reservation group was upset and it was time to go. While we all understand the meaning of reservations, we should have been advised when the reservations were made that we would be expected to be done by 7pm. This was such a disappointing ending to what would have otherwise been a great evening out with friends.
