Lunch and dinner. Delicious Indian food, from mild Tandoori chicken to spicy Lamb Roganjosh. Plenty of options for vegetarians here.

A group of friends and I chose Taj India for a mid-week get together and found it to be a disappointing experience. The food itself was good, but we received terrible service from two different waitresses. Refills were non-existent and if asked for anything, no matter how routine or trivial, they acted as if it was inconveniencing them to offer any service at all. We typically eat out several times per week, but due to the poor attitude and terrible service, I would not recommend Taj India for an evening meal. (December 2004)
I have been a frequent visitor to Taj India since the mid-80s. For the last 20 years I have found the food to be consistently very good. On the few occasions that things weren't optimal I've simply asked to speak to the owner/manager on duty and was very satisfied with the results ("excuse me, but may I speak to Pindar..."). The "silver platter" combination dinners are almost a work of art besides being delicious and although I've eaten this many times it continues to draw me back. I'm not a restaurant shill, but I am a huge fan of this place.
One more thing: twice a year there is a dinner buffet celebrating the "Festival of colors" and also the "Festival of lights" which has dishes not available any other time of year. This typically occurs in March and October. The dates change yearly so if you are interested call ahead for information and reservations, which are highly recommended.
Have always had a good experience at this place. The atmosphere is pleasant and gives an authentic charm to the place. We were promptly seated at a nice table by the window. Service was good and friendly. My most recent experience started with a Sam Adams which was served in a large beer glass, but the beer itself was not ice cold, just moderately cold. The nan is always fresh and very tasty.
I had the chicken tikka masala , which was very good, although with a little less spice and heat than I would have preferred. My friend had a spinach/feta dish which was tasty and went well with the nan. The basmatic rice is excellent and made perfectly.
I tasted some of the rice pudding which tasted excellent and not too sweet. My only criticism is that it could have been creamier with less liquid.
There is not a big selection in Birmingham as far as indian places go, but Taj is pretty good.
Food is mediocre, Buffet is sub-mediocre.
I don't think you need to bother going anywhere else; Taj India is the very best.
We took my parents here for a special lunch and were very dissapointed. The food was mediocre - tandoori meat dry, curries underspiced, and portions small for the price. The lunch buffet had only a few dishes and did not look appealing. Silver Coin has much better food, a nicer dining room, and friendlier staff. Maybe we just hit them on a bad day - but I think that this must have been the only game in town for it to be so popular for so many years.
