Kohinoor
1207 20th St. South (Five Points South, Southside)
202-4021
Kohinoor is an "Indo-Pak" restaurant located in what was once home to Mancha's. It specializes in Hyderabadi-style cooking, reports Tom Gaskin in a January 2009 City Scene review, "based on centuries-old cooking traditions consisting of very spiced but very precise application of spices in an almost ceremonial fashion." Strongly spiced stews with a variety of meats (no pork) dominate the menu. This is different from other Indian restaurants in town, he writes, and is "an adventure." The Tandoori chicken was much more heavily spiced with yogurt and mint than you may be used to. Chilly chicken was "assertive," and they enjoyed the traditional ceremonial Hyderabadi mutton biryani, along with kadhai mutton. Place your order and pick it up at the counter. "This is a very low-key, inexpensive, narrowly focused, regionally specialized restaurant which surely has a niche market," Gaskin writes.

Lunch and dinner. Full bar, banquet facilities. Offering a wide range of Indian dishes, including Southern Indian dishes not previously available in this area, Indo-Chinese dishes, chicken, lamb, seafood, vegetarian. The atmosphere is nice enough for date night but family-friendly, too. A personal favorite. Named a "hidden gem of dining" in Birmingham News City Scene, March 2009.
