Avo is a California-inspired restaurant owned by Green Apple Restaurant Group, which has two restaurants in Nashville and also owns Jackson's Bar & Bistro in Homewood's SoHo. using local ingredients in the food and clean, crisp lines in the decor. Owner Tom Sheffer calls Avo's cuisine "Cal-abama" and the name of the restaurant comes from California shorthand for avocado. Balcony seating available. The Birmingham News' Susan Swagler complained about the portion sizes, the lighting, and about the smoke wafting up from the bar downstairs (of course) in a review in City Scene in late May 2009, but said the food was great, called the flavors of the "inventive menu" "fresh and intense" and said they were "immediately struck by the crisp, clean lines of this restaurant."
Downstairs is Dram, a whiskey bar that also serves food.

I recently visited Avo/Dram and had a horrific experience. The staff were extremely rude and did not even come to our table to offer us a glass of water for thirty minutes (and this was on a Thursday!). I don't mind upscale dining prices at all, but I do expect adequate service. Our food was cold and when I told our waiter he sighed and said it was supposed to be room temperature....that's a first. I will not be back and have told all my colleges and friends not to go here. It was HORRIBLE! I really hope this resturant is shut down soon and a place that is not an embarresment to Mountian Brook Village takes its place. Avo is the worst place to hit the village in a very long time and I have resided her for 10years!

Avo and Dram is a professional and well kept establishment. Food, drink, and service are all exceptional. Anyone that reads this review should disregard the previous reader's comment, if not even for her horrible spelling. Our staff is never rude, always timely, and caring. Everyone loves both Avo and Dram and that is why we have people continuously returning week after week. Sorry Jillian, but your comment is ridiculous. I'll make sure to tell my COLLEAGUES what an EMBARRASSMENT Avo/Dram is. :)

I have dined at both Avo and Dram and have always had excellent dining experiences -- including service, friendliness of staff, and excellent food. This establishment is a welcome addition to the area! My only complaint is they're not yet open for lunch.

I have eaten Sunday brunch at Avo and had a great experience. The ham was too salty for my taste but, hey, I will just order something else next time.
