Southern Foodways Film Festival
If you're looking for a weekend road trip this month, head to Athens, Ga., Aug. 22 for the Southern Foodways Alliance's Potlikker Film Festival. Travel through the South through SFA-produced and directed short films that document and celebrate regional food culture.
There will be Southern eats, beer from Athens' own Terrapin Beer Company, music and poetry. Reservations are required; cost is $45.
There will also be a separate dinner on Aug. 21, and food and music tours of Athens on the afternoon of Aug. 22.
What is the SFA? This member-supported organization "documents, studies, and celebrates the diverse food cultures of the changing American South." As they say on their web site, "We stage symposia on food culture, produce documentary films, publish compendiums of great writing, and—perhaps most importantly—preserve, promote, and chronicle our region’s culinary standard bearers. We’re talking white tablecloth chefs and fried chicken cooks, barbecue pitmasters and peanut farmers." Members include chefs and academics, writers and eaters.
