New Review: Mr. Chen's
OK, the cold spicy sliced pig ears were a little too adventurous for our Western palate, but everything else we had at Mr. Chen's was delicious, as you can read in our new full-length review posted today.
Mr. Chen’s is a relatively new restaurant, tucked away in a strip mall next to Green Valley Drugs. It’s gotten a lot of good chatter on Internet foodie boards such as Chowhound for its authentic cuisine. You'll find things like intestine, squid, beef belly, bitter melon, and the aforementioned pig ears. Despite the authentic food, Mr. Chen’s is still very approachable for novice Westerners. The menu is clear, the servers speak English, forks are provided, and the décor is pleasant, and there are plenty of delicious dishes available for all tastes, like the steam buns pictured here.
It's been quite a while since we wrote a full-length restaurant review, and for that we apologize. Bhamdining.com is primarily a hobby site, and our day jobs over the past year or so have become quite hectic. We'll try to do better. But even when we don't have new full-length reviews, we do post short impressions and news in our blog, and you also can peruse the listings and read the comments of other restaurant goers, so come back often.

This is the 2nd real Chinese place I've found. While I have to admit its good, the food seems to have the more subtle flavors of Taiwanese, which isn't much my style. Also, it's lacking in veggies (green veggies and such). A fave for most people is the soup dumplings.
So, I'd say if you like Chinese food it may be your new fave. However, I still stick with the Red Pearl/Super Oriental not because its better food, but has dishes more my style.
Being Taiwanese, it's a real treat to have an authentic Taiwanese cafe here in Birmingham. It's a taste of Taipei without the 23 hour plane ride. You won't see most of these dishes at your typical Chinese restaurant. I personally feel the quality of the food is better than that served at Red Pearl. The cold sliced pig ears are terrific, and I also highly recommend the Taiwanese stir-fried rice noodles, shredded pork with bean curd and bamboo shoots, stir-fried bitter melon (get it with pork instead of beef), and the whole fish in black bean sauce.
Hoa tche! Mr. Chen's has quite authentic Taiwanese delicacies and I can't get over their Bubble Tea! I remember bringing take out of theirs to my home sick father (from Taiwan obviously) and he asked me never to visit him without bringing their food over as well. Please do try this splendid restaurant and try a few adventurous dishes.
