Two-Time Grammy Winner To Perform At Veranda
Don Schlitz will perform Aug. 5 at Veranda on Highland as part of the “Veranda Summer Singer and Songwriter Series.”
Cocktails are available beginning at 5:30 p.m., followed by dinner at 6:45 p.m. and the show at 8:15 p.m. The cost is $75, which includes a three course meal and the show. Accompanying the meal are selections from an exclusive “Songwriter menu” created by Veranda’s executive chef Tom Robey. Iron-seared Alaskan halibut and herb lacquered chicken are among the options for the main course.
Schlitz's career took off in 1978 when Kenny Rogers recorded his song “The Gambler.” Later, it earned Schlitz a Grammy along with the Country Music Association’s and the Academy of Country Music’s “Song of the Year” honors.
Another song written by Schlitz, “On the Other Hand” performed by Randy Travis, received three “Song of the Year” honors from the Country Music Association, the Academy of Country Music and the Nashville Songwriters Association International.
In addition to Rogers and Travis, Schlitz's songs have played major roles in the careers of famed artists like Tanya Tucker, Alison Krauss, John Conlee, Alabama, Keith Whitley, Mary Chapin Carpenter, The Judds, The Nitty Gritty Dirt Band and others. He was inducted into the Nashville Songwriters Association’s Hall of Fame in 1993.
Other upcoming artists in the “Veranda Summer Singer and Songwriter Series” include No. 1 songwriters Melanie Safka (August 19) and Richard Leigh (September 2).
