Lunch and dinner featuring barbecue, steak and seafood, salads, sandwiches, and a couple of interesting-looking barbecue/Chinese fusion dishes. Seven different sauces, include North Alabama white BBQ sauce, North and South Carolina style sauces, Asian barbecue sauce, and jalapeno-onion sauce.Sunday brunch with New Orleans-style Southern favorites alongside dishes featuring smoked meats. In a September 2007 City Scene review when it was BoneDaddy's, Fletcher Harvey called it "a more or less traditional barbecue joint/steak house in the making with an ambitious, basically well-executed menu." He enjoyed smoked chicken quesadilla, crawfish beignets, black angus filet ("as near perfect as it gets"), marinated sirloin steak, baked sweet potato, fried catfish platter, generous side salads, chocolate bread pudding. All dressings and sauces are made in-house. Thumbs down for cornbread dressing and spicy potato salad. This family-friendly restaurant is owned by former Fleming's partner John Cowan and former Birmingham banking executive Jimmy Taylor Sr. A top 10 finalist in the Birmingham News' "Best Ribs in Birmingham" contest, 2008.

My first visit to Bonedaddy's was yesterday and I was welcomed with a warm greeting by the hostess. Then a wonderful waitress served us and gave great suggestions. My boyfriend ordered the rib combo plate - both were tender, flavorful and with little fat. I had ordered a steak and there was a mix-up with my order. The waitress was calm and kept me posted on correcting my order and making sure we were happy. Luckily we were in no hurry and enjoyed ourselves. I would eat there again.
My family ate there last week. We were diasppointed that everything brought to us was completely cold. It tasted good, but was hard to get past the coldness. Tha waitstaff offered to re-heat it. So, we weren't duly impressed. We'll try them again, though.
I went for lunch this week. Wasn't crowded. Very friendly and upbeat waitress. I ordered the rib plate. It came with two sides and corn muffins. The muffins were overcooked and not worth eating. Everything else was served hot and timely. The ribs, although a little stringy on top, were delicious. My favorite was the sauce. I think I am addicted. I will return again. Probably today.
I ate there for the first time today. We had a very good lunch. I had the pulled pork sandwich and my hasband had the brisket sandwich. My husband said it was the best beef brisket he has ever had. We definitely be back most likely this week. I told my mom about it and she wants us to go for lunch. I am looking forward to it.
You have got to be kidding me! Sweet Bones Alabama. I read were they actually paid someone to come up with this name? The only thing worse,is the food, the service and the little girl at the front door!
You know Im not one to bash any eating establishment but this one just has to be brought to light. Their Food is OK and Their service used to be good but in the last few weeks it all seems to have gone south!!!!
My wife and I often eat out in one of the many places up in the Summit and we were eating at Sweetbones often becouse we loved Bonedaddy's so much, but the last FEW times we were in the service was HORRIBLE, in fact on our last visit we had some lady who was so loud and disrespectful it was appauling. She was supposedly the head of the bar but she seemed to struggle with something as simple as our wine....then when she finnaly got our food out after a 30 min wait the "Marinated Ribeye" on a sizziling platter was COLD and over cooked!!!
When we asked to see the manager some guy we had never seen before came out and said sorry he was new and they were having problems with some of the staff since losing their old service manager and the kitchen was still learning the menu.....I do not think this is a valid excuse and it is certainly not the way you handle an angry customer by blaming it on someone else instead of just fixing the problem.
My wife and I used to spend 50-75 dollars a week there but we will not be back to spend our money there since their food and managment quality have gone down so poorly....for a new resturant they do not seem to be able to get things going at all. they have been open for about 2 months + now and everyone we have talked to seems to have had an issue there. Even friends of ours who know their owner say the place will not survive......so my final recomendation is this.....DO NOT WAIST YOUR TIME OR YOUR MONEY WITH THIS PLACE IF YOU WANT TO EAT AT THE SUMMIT YOUR BETTER OFF WITH BEN AND JERRY'S AT LEAST THEIR FOOD IS SUPPOSED TO BE COLD !!!!!
Okay so my husband and I rarely get the chance to go out without our three young ones--so this was a rare and welcomed treat. We decided to "dish" the usual chain joints and head up to The Summit for some local BBQ a la Sweet Bones...well we should have stuck with a frozen pizza from Wal-Mart at least we would have gotten what we paid for.
When we first pulled into the parking lot and were almost ran over by another couple we figured they must know something that we don't. So we scurried in out of the cold only to be half heartedly met by a bewildered looking waitress. We requested to see the menu and after a few minutes decided we would give it a try. The waitress asked for the second time if it would only be just us two, (um we just told her 5 minutes earlier it would be and trust me there was NO ONE in front or behind us) and we responded yes. She showed us to our table and we requested a booth. She seemed annoyed and scanned the 95% empty restaurant as though there was an issue with where to seat us. Finally, we get our booth and our waiter arrives. He was good---although he exaggerated about the size and quality of the Cowboy Bone-In Ribeye--but I'll get to that in a minute. He takes our order and then brings us cold, hard sweet potato muffins and ice-cold cinnamon honey butter. We overlook that and wait on the side salad. While the salad itself was generous in size, it was almost too cold to eat. The dressing was wonderfully thick and rich in flavor; however, you only received a tablespoon-sized cup. When we asked the waiter for "a lot more dressing", he proceeded to bring us another tablespoon. My husband then asked for more sweet potato muffins and this time they were warm and delicious. My husband eagerly awaited the 22oz Bone-In Cowboy Ribeye that, per our waiter was "sent off to be cut to make sure it is the perfect size and weight" and I anticipated my Pulled Chicken Sandwich, French Fries and Super Slaw, after all, we have heard rave reviews. The food came swiftly yet it was cold, hard and tasteless. There was NO BBQ sauce (isn’t this a BBQ joint) with my chicken sandwich and no flavor as well. I have never eaten "BBQ" that needed SALT AND PEPPER! The bread was stale and the fries were cold and hard as sticks. The super slaw was definitely not super; in fact, Captain D’s makes a better slaw than this! The unassuming pickle that accompanied the sandwich wasn't so unassuming - it burned my mouth and the waiter's dry response was "is it hot or spicy?" When my reply was very spicy, he jokingly says, "oh they are a little spicier than normal today, why don't you eat some honey mustard." Ignoring his comment, I requested BBQ sauce with my sandwich and was given another tablespoon sized plastic cup of red sauce that reeked of a heavy-handed spice and vinegar. My husband looked at his meagerly sized steak (I seriously question the 22oz claim) and decided he might as well give it a go. And another. And another because surely there was bright light at the end of the tunnel, right? He then passed me a few bites after which he commented that if he drowned it in steak sauce it might be worth the $30 price tag. But alas, it was no hope and he promptly stopped eating after leaving 2/3 of his flavorless steak on the plate. The side item that accompanied the meat was no better. The potato had a funny taste and was no larger than one you could purchase from your local supermarket. All the toppings were again served in the tablespoon-sized cups and are nowhere near enough to provide flavor to whatever you are eating.
All in all, it was a dismal experience. So much so, we asked to speak with the manager who seemed less than sure of himself and how to handle an unsatisfied customer. He had no immediate resolution and repeatedly asked what was wrong with the meal even after we had given an explanation. So eventually, we offered to pay for 50% of the meal (since we had eaten some of it) and he offered to provide 50% off a second trip if we would only return. The waiter then returned and asked what was wrong with our food. Apologized and told us to come back and try the ribs because those are definitely good. (Well if only the ribs are good why are you serving all the other items!)
Needless to say -- We won't return and we suggest you don't even waste your time!
I wish I had taken the time to pull up this site and read the reviews for Sweet Bones Alabama before my visit on Friday night. After finishing some Christmas shopping, my boyfriend and I decided to give it a try. We were told there would be a 30 minute wait, so we sat ourselves at the bar while we waited on our table. Though the bar was far from crowded (it's not that big) and staffed with two bartenders, we sat there for almost ten minutes before being acknowledged by the staff. Shortly after our drink orders were filled, we were shown to our table.
Our waiter greeted us promptly and, after seeing we already had drinks, left us to look over the menu. When he returned to take our orders, I asked him to tell me about the "Super Slaw." His response was, "Well, I'm not much of a slaw person. So, I'm probably not the best person to ask." I wasn't looking for an opinion, just a basic description. I received that much after probing for a few more details and decided to choose the slaw as the side item with my half pound angus hamburger.
My boyfriend chose the fried shrimp with a baked potato. His entree also came with a side salad and he requested the peppercorn parmesean dressing. The food arrived quickly and we dug in. The slaw was heavy on onions and had little flavor otherwise. I suppose it's tough to achieve a flavor balance when you overload anything with onions! My boyfriend offered his salad to me in exchange for the slaw and I definitely got the better end of that bargain. The salad ingredients were both fresh and plentiful. And, I really liked the creamy peppercorn parmesean dressing.
After finishing the salad, I moved on to my burger. It's difficult to believe that there was a half pound of meat on the sesame seedless bun that was presented to me. The patty was thinner than those I'm accustomed to when ordering a restaurant burger. When I cut it in half for easier handling, I discovered the center to be raw. We called the waiter over and I picked up the burger to show him. I calmly explained that I needed a burger that was cooked a little more than this one. He had the audacity to ask me if I had even taken a bite (it was obvious I hadn't)! I told him no and that I wouldn't be eating it and he replied that "it's really good and that's how we cook them all the time." I questioned their standard cooking practice and told him that had I known, I would have requested it be well done when I ordered it. It seems to me that if the standard practice of a restaurant is to prepare a burger rare, the waiter would have enough sense to warn patrons and give them another option when they place their order.
Our server sent back the undercooked burger and my boyfriend was finished with his meal before the replacement arrived. No manager came to the table and we were offered no apology for the mistake. Our waiter obviously felt the mistake was on my part. Along with many of the other recent reviewers on this site, I have made my first and last visit to Sweet Bones Alabama.
Sweet Bones should be required to hand out these reviews before handing out the menus.
My husband and I ate their tonight and we brought our infant son. Like the other reviews, we were glanced over by the hostess and another waitress who were engaged in conversation while we waited to either seat ourselves or be seated. There were no signs so it was unclear.
It was at least 5 minutes before we were greeted by our waitress who was quite annoyed to take our drink order. I asked her if they could make a BBQ chicken sandwich since there was not one on the menu, and she told me they would serve me the Pulled Chicken plate and give me a bun. They wouldn't go to the trouble of placing the meat on the bun for me. RIDICULOUS!
I also had to take our baby to the restroom to change his diaper. I attempted to use the changing station but it was so disgustingly dirty that I just sat on the toilet and changed him in my lap. There were no paper towels to dry my hands after this diaper change either.
I give Sweet Bones 6 more months. Smug, slow service; mediocre food, funky tasting BBQ sauce, and dirty restrooms GO TO JIM AND NICKS INSTEAD.
Ordered a sam adams, didnt have it, ordered a different beer, didnt have that either. Finally got a beer. The baby back ribs were average. And that is their specialty. The side items they came with were pooor in quality. In particular, the sweet potatoe casserole. It was about 90% pecans and 10% sweet potatoe. And it tasted like it came straight out of the microwave. In addition, there was a white piece of plastic in it that I almost swallowed. The manager was "interested" but hardly concerned. The onion rings were ok, but nothing special.
I wouldnt go back. Try dreamland or jim n nicks for better bbq in bham.
WOW, I am amazed at how frustrated some of you are at this restaurant. I will say that with the more and more "chain" Jim n' Nicks becomes it is nice to have an alterntive when looking for an alternative for "nice" BBQ. I regularly take business clients from around the US to both Sweet Bones and Jim n' Nicks and they are very pleased with the experience at either restaurant.
Sweet Bones has ribs that put Dreamland to shame and a yardbird that is unparrelled around Alabama. Growing up in Texas, I know good BBQ and i can tell you that we need to be thankful for having Sweet Bones here in Bham. Food is great, service can always improve at any restaurant in Bham. We don't live in an area that expects 5 star service, so just be grateful that we have a GREAT BBQ place at the summit.
If your food is not how you like it, then tell someone and quit dragging a restaurant through the mud online behind your screenname. I feel blessed to have a place like Sweet Bones as a dinner option for clients in Bham.
TS above me must work for Sweet Bones if they think we should be thankful it's there.
Go anywhere else for lunch or dinner.
The problem with Sweet Bones starts with poor management and it shows.
Things went downhill before we were even in the door. We made a reservation for 8pm for a group of 14. That morning it became a group of 21 and we let them know around lunchtime the new number. We get there about 7:50 and check-in with the hostess who clearly wants to be somewhere else and doesn't REALLY want to be bothered. And wait...and wait.....and wait untill almost 9pm to be seated. Why? They don't take "reservations", they have phone ahead so you get the next available table. And that's how they treated our party of 21, like we just showed up with no warning. We wound up with three tables of seven near each other. Their "large party" room was already occupied by another large group. Most places that don't take reservations will greatly appreciate large parties giving notice and WILL reserve tables. we do it several times a year. It's called good management and makes for happy customers.
Our waiter at our table of seven was ok. Drinks didn't take that long. Two appetizers ordered for the table. Their version of Egg Rolls came out fairly quick. The chicken wings arrived just ahead of the entrees. I know, chicken wings are hard, and take a LONG time to make. Food ordered varied, ribs, burgers, steak. Everything was just mediocre and no one thought they had a good meal. For a "supposedly" rib joint, this was horrrible. I've gotten better ribs from seafood restaurants. Yes, we were already negative from having to wait an hour, but good food would have changed that. OK food just made us regret coming here more.
Hopefully the number of people coming for the first and last time will outnumber the people who come back thinking this is good food and service. Then maybe something actually good will take over.
For now, Go anywhere else ! !
I drive from coast to coast & I have to say these reviews almost made me not eat here but it was walking distance from the theater where I parked my truck. Yes I drive a truck & no I don't eat buffets & fast food all day & I'm not easily impressed with red lobster or chain restaurants. Anyway I have to say the wings I had @ sweet bones were hands down the best anywhere. I had the tuna for dinner and wasn't impressed but I had been in miami eating line caught fresh ahi off a friends boat the week before so it was my mistake to order it @ a barbecue place. That being said I've eatin barbecue from award winning places & food network stars restaurants and sweet bones is in the top10 easily. I should have had a full rack of ribs instead of adding a couple to my meal but again I think you guys are being extremely judgemental about this place . I'm from Michigan & last I checked it was a little easier going & polite in the south but I could be wrong.
Terrible food. Everything was super sweet. I didn't eat half of my meal. Never going back
this place is like a going to a tourist trap restuarant. The ribs were overcooked and dry. The service was under par. The prices are too much to pay for below average quality. I was suspicious of this palce when the waiter actuaaly said they were kinda busy tthat night. It was a Thursday night and it was not even 50% capacity. In the Summit, you should be waiting on a table. I got a %50 coupon, and think I will donate it to a shelter. It was embarrasing to take my gueast here.
Sweet bones was an ok experience it had an ok price and had fairly resonable service but the food was cold i asked for a medium rare steak and got a steak that was dripping blood and was colder than it was when it came out of the refridgerator i enjoy good bbq and this seemed like a good place to go i had the alabama slammer and the ribs and shrimp was good but the steak that came with it was a discrace to the alabama bbq name and i dont think that it was worth going back a second time but on the other hand the portions you get of food is great if you are a big eater and dont mind quality to go down and a resonable price go down the only thing that was absolutely great was the appetizer it was a massive portion and the pulled pork that was on it was great and i think that it was a meal in itself resonable price but the food was cold and mostly poor prep. so i am NOT going back again...... -Mason
My husband and I went to Sweet Bones this past Friday night. The food and service were good, but the restrooms were absolutely FILTHY. Not sure if we will visit again or not.
I really enjoyed my experience with sweetbones today. The service was great the waiter was very friendly and gave great suggestion. Everyone seemed to enjoy working at sweetbones. I enjoy my food and there was plenty of it. The price was also great. Thank you Joseph for such pleasant service. He could teach some other server how to wait on their customers.
We met friends for dinner and drinks last night at Sweet Bones and it was AWESOME! The service was great, a really sweet and efficient waitress. The food was outstanding and I am craving the ribs and sauce right now so bad I could cry! Mark Phillips and the Groove Daddies were performing and put on a fantastic show. We are thankful for the fun atmosphere and delicious hot food. Couldn't be happier! Forget the old bad reviews, this place is great!
