Started in Tuscaloosa in 1988 (we used to eat there when we lived in Tuscaloosa), Moe's relocated in 2000 to Vail, Colo., where there are now two locations. Orange Beach followed, and in late 2007 the Vestavia Hills store opened. A no-frills barbecue establishment, with rolls of paper towels on the tables, order-at-the-counter service. Five meat choices for sandwiches, seven platters, about 10 sides. A November 2007 City Scene review gave high marks for the pulled pork sandwich topped with marinated slaw, smoked turkey sandwich, fried catfish sandwich. "Side items ran from barely passable to really, really good," (baked beans and fried green tomatoes among the latter, sweet potato salad among the former), and shrimp Moe' boy was disappointing. Live music in the bar area on Friday nights. A top five Reader's Choice winner in the Birmingham News' "Best Ribs in Birmingham" contest, 2008.

This is good "smoker" BBQ. We always get the "Doublewide". For $19.99 you get a very large serving of pork, buttered buns and two sides. It will easily serve 3-4 people. Smoker BBQ, IMO, is not quite as good as pit BBQ. I would rank Moe's as the third best BBQ in the B'ham metro area. First would be Tin Top in Calera followed by Green Top in Jasper. Don't confuse Tin Roof with Tin Top. Tin Roof is not in the same universe with Tin Top.
Yum, yum, yum.
While the BBQ itself is kind of standard fare here, the sides are worth coming back for again and again. The cheese grits are the best I've had in Birmingham, the baked beans are delicious and smoky, and the tangy (!?!) banana pudding is a dessert I dream of often. Coupled with a cool atmosphere and buttery grilled cornbread, Moe's is a place I'm glad to have so close to home.
This writer recently ate at the Daphne, AL store near Mobile Bay. Excellent smoker pulled pork barbecue. Excellent sides, especially the collard greens. Will return to try the ribs and the other sides. Blues musicians featured regularly. Excellent concept. Glad Moe's is in the Mobile area.
I love Moe's. There is a lot of options in Bham but I always come back to Moe's. There are now four locations here.
