We think Johnny Ray's is not as good as it was before they started branching out. The old Valley Ave. location, in an old Sambo's restaurant, is still the best. The barbecue's OK, but Honey's Pies are worth the visit!

Johnny Ray's is just down right awful. We have eaten at two of their locations - Vestavia and Morgan Road. The Vestavia location is really bad. At best it is a 2 on a 10 scale.

Going back 15 years or more, they had really great bbq. Probably the best pulled bbq pork and beef in town. Things started going downhill and I have not bee back in a while. Its was never "bad." Great chocolate cream pie though. I would be willing to give them another try.

Johnny Ray's is one of my favorite BBQ places in town. The open face pork sandwich is my favorite thing they also have good baked beans and fries. The Lemon pie is my favorite dessert. The location on Valley has veggie plates at lunch which are also good.

I used to work at Johnny Ray's off Hwy 280 about 12 years ago and it was wonderful. I just visited the one in Pelham and it was awful. They were out of white chicken. The open face brunnette was filled with bones and grissle. They have gone up on the price of the kids chicken meal but only give one chicken finger now and used to give more. I can go to Ruby Tuesdays or Applebees and get a lot more for the money on the kids chicken and much better chicken. The kids meal is a real rip-off now. I have definitely noticed a HUGE decline in quality over the past 12 years.

Well, you all aren't eating at the Chelsea Johnny Ray's because it is quite good. My wife and I and our Church friends eat there at least every month and we have never been dissatisfied. I believe that most of the new JR's are franchised, and the owners in Chelsea really care about their business. If you used to like JR and had a bad experience, come out to Chelsea. We like the Sunny D-lite or Rail's special.

The Vestavia location should be closed. Awful. Valley is still good and a lot fo food for the money. Most people eat lousy chopped pork around here which you can't even tell what it is.

I agree with a previous poster. I have never been a fan of Johnny Rays. However, I love the one in Chelsea. Take our or dine in I have always been pleased when ordering from this one.

Johnny Ray's in Vestavia is undergoing some great changes in their menu and quality. Great pork, ribs and veggies will tempt anyone! Now they'added quesadillas and nachos! GOOD MOVE!! Still great food at a reasonable price.

Why in the world would a BBQ joint serve Mexican food. They need to focus on BBQ.

I am always really pleased with the Johnny Ray's in Vestavia, AL. The service is quick, the wait staff is attentive and the owner isn't afraid to come over and ask how your meal is. My family and I actually travel out of our way to eat there at least once a week. I can't say enough great things about this restaurant.

Agree with kt above. Visited the Pelham location and could not eat the food it tasted so bad...after we had to wait over 20 minutes to get it. When we mentioned it to the cashier, all we got was 'sorry'. We left that location and placed a take-out order from the Vestavia location where we have ALWAYS had great BBQ. As usual, it was delicious. Best of all at the Vestavia location is the service and the way everyone treats you like welcome family.
