Carlile's Barbecue
3511 6th Avenue South
254-9266
Founded in 1945. Birmingham News' John Archibald described this Southside/Lakeview area hole in the wall this way in his column: "...decent chopped pork, better-than-that cheeseburgers and guilty, greasy hand-cut fries distributed by a pair of sassy blond waitresses, Tammy No. 1 and Tammy No. 2, whom the regulars enjoy even more than the pig butt."

Recently I was introduced to Carlile's BBQ by a friend of mine for lunch. I had never heard of this place before but obviously many other people had. It is a small BBQ joint with a BBQ joint atmosphere, which is exactly what you like to see when you want GOOD BBQ. The menu has other thing besides BBQ, there is a daily special, such as meatloaf, fried chicken, fried fish... On my first visit I tried their hamburger steak with mashed potatoes and a side salad. The Hamburger steak was great, it was covered in gravy with onions (I had the option to have no onions) and the potatoes tasted homemade and had the same gravy. I left that day needing a nap. On my next visit I took my husband. He had a BBQ sandwich and I had a BBQ salad. My salad was very good, it was a good sized salad with chopped BBQ pork on top, accompanied by their awesome rib sauce...my mouth waters thinking about it. My husband was also very pleased with his sandwich which was a good size and the fries that came with it were also very good. So good in fact that on our third visit I got my own order of fries so that we wouldn't be fighting over the last of them again. I was very surprised that I hadn't heard more mention of Carlile's because I have recommended it to several people and plan on visiting often. The service was great, the food was great and the price was even better. (July 2005)
You must work at Carlile's or something. The food is horrible and the sevice is even worse. You are the only person to ever say anything good about the place. Go to TJ's around the corner so you won't be sick.
